Hello

I'm Chris, a tutor teaching online or in the Boston area. Let's start learning!

Chris worked with our high school son over the course of two and a half years on Calculus, Latin, and SAT prep. We found him to be organized, patient, and highly knowledgeable. In particular Chris’ manner of encouragement instilled in our son a sense of confidence and academic engagement. When our son graduated from high school we asked which of his teachers he had learned the most from, Chris was one of the only three names mentioned.

- Kevin and Joanne

(Parents of high schooler in Boston Area)

What do I teach?

MATH

This is my most common subject and I love it! I've taught up to college level calculus / linear algebra, as well as helped train for the American Math Competition.

LATIN

I first took Latin in 6th grade and continued through college. I now teach up through the AP level. My experience working as a translator (Thai to English) also gives me a very different perspective than most Latin teachers on why Latin is the way it is and how to approach translation.

CODING / CS

I've worked with students in Javascript, Java as well as general computer science.

SAT / ACT

I tend to focus on the math section, but have also taught many students for the whole test, including in classes and in private tutoring.

Who are my students?

As a tutor for nearly 10 years, I've had many students. Here are some examples. (Names and details changed for privacy reasons).

Angie, 14

Latin, Math

Angie started a new school in 9th grade and then...2020 happened. She's had trouble following along in Zoom class and she's had trouble getting assignments in on time, so we work on both understanding as well as the process.

Ernesto, 17

Math, SAT

Ernesto has always been good at math. He’s taking AP Calculus and finds it challenging, but doable, but wants to go deeper. We now work on practicing for the SAT, exploring harder math through math competitions like the AMC, and.   We get together every week, make sure he’s up to speed for his classes, then start having fun exploring deeper math topics.

Diandra, 18

AP Latin

Diandra has always been good at Latin, but this year, AP Latin took her by surprise. The Aeneid doesn’t seem to follow the normal rules of Latin that she has been learning for several years. We go over her translations, but also talk about why “real” Latin doesn’t seem to follow the rules. Given my background as a translator, we also talk about how these translation questions are handled at a professional level and why her confusion isn’t “her fault” but is a result of the nature of languages.

Mary, 32

Math

Mary is going back to school for her MSW and now suddenly finds herself needing to take a math class for the first time in 15 years! Mary was never confident or interested in math, and now feels tremendous anxiety about passing this class. We get together every week and make a clear plan of how she will stay on top of her class, make sure we understand the teacher’s expectations, and prepare ahead for the material.

Robert, 16

Math, Coding/Computer Science

Robert is bored at school and his parents and him are interested in going deeper. Our sessions together are much more free-wheeling; we explore interesting new math topics not typically seen in school or dive into some coding projects in Java or Javascript

John, 13

Beginner Latin, General Study Skills

John initially thought Latin seemed interesting, but is now falling behind. His homework every week is boring grammar exercises that he seems to understand less and less (school by Zoom doesn’t help). Every week we work reinforce the fundamentals, but also to try using Latin by reading stories and sometimes writing our own! We then talk about his plan for this week's assignments and how he wants to accomplish what he needs to.

Bio

I have been working as an educator and tutor since 2012. I began tutoring after graduating from Brown University in 2012, teaching math and chemistry.

In the fall of 2012, I moved to Thailand where I taught ESL in K-12 schools. While there I also fell in love with learning Thai, which eventually led to forming a freelance translation business which I still maintain (thaiwithchris.com).

In late 2015, I moved back to Boston and resumed teaching here, tutoring math, teaching SAT classes in a local high school, while also working part-time as an ESL teacher at Approach International Student Center.

Now with a decade of experience in the world of education, I am happy to offer tutoring in Latin, Math, SAT/ACT prep and computer science.
